In 1985, Adrian Veidt, formerly referred to as the vigilante Ozymandias, created a fake attack on ny City by a squid-like alien that resulted in millions within ny being killed, coercing nations to figure together against a standard threat and to avert a nuclear holocaust.
Set within the comic’s alternate history of the 20th century, vigilantes, once seen as heroes, are outlawed thanks to their violent methods. Watchmen takes place 34 years after the events of the comic series.
The series focuses on events surrounding racist violence in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2019. While the series is technically a sequel, which takes place 34 years after the events of the comics within an equivalent alternate reality, Lindelof wanted to introduce new characters and conflicts that make a replacement story within the Watchmen continuity, instead of creating a reboot. Lindelof likened the tv series to a “remix” of the first comic series.
